Surat: Demand for National Policy to Address Damage to Farmers from High-Voltage Power Lines
Surat. The Kisan Samaj (Gujarat) has sent a detailed memorandum to the Prime Minister of India, demanding the formulation of a clear and just policy to address the damage caused to farmers by high-voltage power towers and transmission lines across the state and the country, including the Olpad taluka of Surat district.
The memorandum states that the 66 kV to 800 kV electric transmission lines and towers passing through agricultural land are causing economic, social, and mental problems for farmers. Farmer organizations have alleged that in many cases, farmers' land is being used without their consent, while affected farmers are not receiving adequate compensation and justice. The Kisan Samaj has urged the central government to establish alternative routes for transmission lines that would minimize damage to agricultural land.
Additionally, they have called for a transparent and uniform policy for assessing damages and compensation for farmers. The memorandum also demands that affected farmers be provided with appropriate financial assistance and permanent compensation. Farmer leaders have stated that under the current system, farmers are not receiving relief commensurate with their actual losses.
The Khedut Samaj has also urged the central and state governments to halt all activities related to new high-voltage tower lines and transmission projects until a clear policy is developed on this issue. Present at the event were Jayeshbhai Patel, President of the Gujarat Kisan Congress, former director of Sumul Dairy and farmer leader Jayeshbhai Patel, farmer and cooperative leader Darshanbhai Nayak, President of the South Gujarat Kisan Samaj Rameshbhai Patel, Sarpanch of Morthan Jayeshbhai Desai, Kaushikbhai Desai, and a large number of farmers and representatives of farmer organizations. Farmer leaders have appealed to the government to protect the interests of farmers and to make a prompt positive decision on this important issue.
