Surat: Detailed Information on GST Appeal Process Provided at Joint Seminar by Chamber and GST Appellate Tribunal
Surat. A special seminar on 'GSTAT Appeal Filing and Process Awareness Program – Understanding Appeals Before the GST Appellate Tribunal' was organized on Friday, June 19, 2026, at the Ushakant Kanchanlal Marfatiya Hall in Sarsana, as a joint initiative of the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCCI) and the GST Appellate Tribunal.
The event provided important information related to the GST appeal process to entrepreneurs, tax consultants, chartered accountants, lawyers, and taxpayers. In the welcome address, SGCCCI President Ashok Jirawala stated that the Goods and Services Tax Appellate Tribunal (GSTAT) is emerging as an important pillar of the judicial process in the GST framework. He expressed confidence that this platform would play a significant role in providing timely and effective justice to the business and industrial sectors.
He mentioned that SGCCCI is continuously working to protect the interests of industry, trade, and taxpayers. Over the past 12 days, the Chamber has represented several important issues related to GST before the state and central governments. These include relief in the time limit for second appeals in GSTAT, issuance of decision orders in English, responsible use of artificial intelligence in GST administration, clarification on appeal-related provisions, resolution of GST credit disputes, and suggestions for incentive schemes like 'Mera GST–Mera Gujarat'.
GSTAT Vice President G. M. Patel noted that when GST was implemented in July 2017, the monthly collection was approximately ₹90,000 crores, which increased to ₹1.94 lakh crores by May 2026.
He stated that with revenue growth, questions and disputes related to industry and taxpayers have also increased, and efforts are being made to make the appeal process more effective and transparent. GSTAT member R. G.
Hadwani elaborated on the appeal filing process, stating that the appellant should prepare the appeal with a copy of the order, grounds for appeal, details of facts, necessary documents, and the prescribed pre-deposit. He emphasized that the strength of any case depends on its facts, which are the backbone of the entire judicial process. Meanwhile, GSTAT member Sanjay Dwivedi mentioned that for success in an appeal, it is essential to respond timely to the show-cause notice, maintain proper documentation, clearly state legal grounds, and reference relevant notifications, circulars, and judicial decisions.
Expert speaker Ajay Suhag provided a detailed presentation on security deposits, court fees, pre-deposits, and the process of various types of appeals in GSTAT. Many representatives from various industries, taxpayers, and professionals were present at the event, along with the Chamber's honorary secretary Paresh Lathia. The seminar was conducted by Hemant Desai, advisor of the Chamber's GST committee, while the committee's co-chairman Rohan Desai presented the program outline.
In the end, during the question-and-answer session, experts addressed various queries from the participants. At the conclusion of the program, the Chamber's honorary treasurer Atul Patel expressed gratitude to all participants and speakers.
