Surat: Major action by DRI at the airport, passenger detained with 8 kg of hydroponic weed
Surat. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) conducted a major operation at Surat Airport, seizing approximately 8 kilograms of hydroponic weed (hybrid cannabis) and detaining a passenger.
The official value of the seized narcotic is around 2.80 crore rupees, while its estimated value in the illegal market is about 8 crore rupees. Based on intelligence information, the DRI team was stationed at Surat Airport from the morning of May 9, 2026. Surveillance was heightened before the arrival of Air India Express flight number IX-1292 from Delhi to Surat.
With the help of airline staff, four suspicious passengers were identified and taken for detailed inspection in the domestic arrival area. During the investigation, no objectionable items were found in the luggage of three passengers, and they were subsequently released. However, nine vacuum-packed opaque polyethylene packets were found in one passenger's check-in bag.
These packets contained a green leafy substance, which appeared to be hydroponic weed at first glance. Preliminary chemical tests conducted by the Regional Forensic Science Laboratory (RFSL) confirmed the substance as cannabis (hydroponic weed/marijuana). During questioning, the accused passenger admitted to involvement in the transportation of the prohibited narcotic.
After completing the weighing and initial forensic examination process, the DRI detained the accused under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 (NDPS Act) and initiated further legal action. According to DRI officials, this operation reflects the vigilance and commitment of security and enforcement agencies against drug trafficking. All agencies at Surat Airport are continuously monitoring and taking action to prevent illegal activities.
