Surat Sees Surge in Admissions to Government Schools Amid Economic Strain and Improved Education Standards
Surat, April 11, 2025 – In a notable shift from the national trend of preferring private education, parents in Surat are increasingly flocking to government schools for their children's admission. The primary reasons driving this change are the current economic downturn affecting the diamond industry and the significant improvements in the quality of education offered by government institutions, coupled with lower fees.
A vivid example of this trend was observed on Friday morning at Maharaja Krishnakumarsinhji Primary School No. 334, located in the Amroli area. A long queue, stretching nearly half a kilometre, formed outside the school premises as parents arrived as early as 4:00 a.m. to secure a spot for their children. The school has only 500 seats available, while nearly 5,000 admission forms are reportedly being submitted.
The ongoing admissions process is part of the “Mission Pravesh” initiative launched by the Municipal Primary Education Committee. Interestingly, many parents are now pulling their children out of private schools and seeking admission in government schools instead.
As per media report, one parent shared that they initially enrolled their child in a private school but found the escalating fees unsustainable. They added that government schools now provide quality education along with necessary facilities, making them a more practical choice.
This growing confidence in government-run schools signals a significant transformation in public perception. It also highlights that with continued investment and reforms in the education sector, government schools have the potential to rival private institutions in both quality and public appeal.
