Cooling Measures and Dietary Adjustments Ensure Animal Wellbeing

Rajkot Zoo Prepares for Summer Heat: Protecting Animals and Welcoming Visitors

As summer arrives, Rajkot's Pradyuman Park Zoo implements special protocols to safeguard the well-being of its animal inhabitants. These measures ensure the animals and birds can withstand the rising temperatures and maintain good health throughout the season.

Developed under the guidance of the Central Zoo Authority of India, Rajkot Zoo has become a popular tourist destination in Saurashtra, attracting an estimated 7.5 lakh visitors annually. The zoo houses a diverse collection of wildlife, with 564 animals representing 67 different species.

Combating the Heat

To combat the scorching summer heat, the zoo authorities have taken several steps:

  • Large water pits: These have been constructed within the enclosures of large animals like lions, tigers, leopards, and bears. Easy access to cool water allows these creatures to regulate their body temperature.
  • Dietary adjustments: Carnivorous animals tend to eat less during the summer, with their food intake typically reduced by around 10%. Conversely, reptiles like crocodiles, snakes, and turtles exhibit an increase in their daily food consumption.

ORS for Hydration and Diarrhea Prevention

Additionally, the zoo incorporates Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) into the drinking water provided to the animals. This helps prevent dehydration and diarrhea, a common health concern for animals during hot weather.

A Haven for Wildlife and Tourists

Rajkot Zoo's dedication to animal welfare ensures a comfortable summer experience for its inhabitants. This commitment, combined with the diverse range of wildlife on display, continues to attract large numbers of visitors, solidifying the zoo's position as a premier tourist destination in Saurashtra.
