Gujarat Introduces AI-Based Early Warning System to Prevent School Dropouts
Gujarat has taken a significant leap in the field of education by launching an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered Early Warning System to identify and prevent potential school dropouts. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the state education department has implemented this initiative to support students across primary, secondary, and higher secondary levels in completing their education.
According to education officials in Rajkot district, the pre-existing Child Tracking System portal under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan has now been integrated with the new AI-driven platform. This system uses data such as a student’s age, gender, attendance, academic performance, assessments, and family background to predict which students may be at risk of discontinuing their studies.
As per agency report, Shailesh Patel, the District Management Information System Coordinator in Rajkot, stated that the urban region comprises 964 schools with around 2.80 lakh students, while the rural region includes 1,757 schools serving approximately 3.47 lakh students. So far, the system has identified 3,206 students who are potentially at risk of dropping out.
Guided by District Primary Education Officer Dikshit Patel, these at-risk students will be given special attention during the school enrollment campaign to ensure they understand the importance of education and are encouraged to stay in school. The AI-based algorithm enables timely identification and targeted intervention, helping educators design personalized support plans.
The system also takes into account factors such as the physical condition of schools, classroom environment, family’s socio-economic status, student health and mental well-being, and attendance patterns. Based on this comprehensive analysis, specialized programs are being developed to retain students in the education system.
This initiative marks a notable step in Gujarat’s journey towards a “digital education revolution.” It not only showcases technological advancement but also reflects the state government's vision and commitment to inclusive and future-ready education.
