Surat City Gears Up for Road Safety Week: Crackdown on Traffic Violations and Stray Animals

Surat : The Surat City Road Safety Council convened under the leadership of the Police Commissioner to strategize for a successful Road Safety Week and address pressing traffic concerns in the city. The meeting, held on January 29th, 2024, saw active participation from key officials, including the Joint Commissioner of Police Traffic, Deputy Commissioner of Police Traffic, RTO officer, Executive Engineer of Municipal Corporation, Traffic Branch officers, and Council members.

Curbing Traffic Chaos through Stricter Enforcement

The Police Commissioner emphasized the importance of intensive awareness programs during Road Safety Week to educate citizens about responsible traffic behavior. He also directed stricter enforcement measures to tackle the city's chronic parking woes. Stringent action against haphazard parking, particularly in "no parking" zones, was prioritized to ensure smooth traffic flow. The Commissioner underscored the need for punitive measures against violators to deter such irresponsible behavior.

Addressing the Stray Animal Menace

The meeting delved into the issue of stray animals posing a safety hazard on Surat's streets. The Municipal Corporation's efforts in tackling this problem were reviewed, with statistics revealing that 650 stray cattle were captured in January alone. Out of these, 404 were sent to designated shelters, while fines amounting to Rs 5.68 lakh were imposed on violators. The Commissioner acknowledged the municipality's efforts but stressed the need for sustained action to effectively manage the stray animal population.

Zero Tolerance for Traffic Rule Violations

The RTO office reported the cancellation of 985 driving licenses in 2023 for traffic rule violations. The Commissioner reiterated the importance of strict enforcement in ensuring compliance with traffic regulations. He emphasized that a "zero tolerance" policy towards violators is crucial for creating a safer traffic environment.

Leveraging Technology for Improved Traffic Management

The meeting also featured a joint presentation by Narmada University and SVNIT showcasing the Health Department's initiatives in traffic signal modernization, addressing drunk driving, and enhancing emergency services at accident black spots. The Commissioner commended these efforts and expressed his hope for continued collaboration between various stakeholders in streamlining traffic management within the city.
