Vadodara, October 14, 2023: The son of a former Bharuch district panchayat chief was arrested on Saturday for allegedly causing a hit-and-run accident in Vadodara that killed one person and injured another.
The accused, Keyur Patel, is the son of Alpaben Patel, whose term as district panchayat chief ended a month ago. He was driving a Fortuner car with the inscription "District Panchayat Chief" written on it when he hit Rajesh Patel and his wife, who were taking a walk on Friday night.
Rajesh Patel died during treatment in the hospital, and his wife is in critical condition in the ICU.
Police say that Patel was driving under the influence of alcohol and that a liquor bottle was found in the car after the accident.
Patel has been arrested along with his friend Divyang Maheshwari, who was also in the car at the time of the accident. An FIR has been registered against both of them.
The relatives of the deceased have alleged that the accident was due to serious negligence on Patel's part. They say that he was driving at a high speed and that he was drunk.
The incident has sparked outrage in Vadodara, with many people demanding that Patel be punished severely.
