First COVID-19 death of 2023 reported in Surat

Surat, Gujarat - The city of Surat has reported its first COVID-19 related death in 2023. A 70-year-old woman from Kapodra died due to the virus. In the past two days, three cases of COVID-19 were reported in the city. 

The elderly woman from Kapodra had been experiencing shortness of breath and swelling in her legs for the past 12 days. She was admitted to a hospital where she tested positive for COVID-19. The patient had diabetes, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease, and died while undergoing treatment. The seven members of her household who had come in contact with her tested negative for the virus, as did the 15 others who were in contact with her.

In addition to the death, an 86-year-old man from Ghoddaud Road was admitted to the hospital after experiencing cold, cough, fever, and shortness of breath for three days. His COVID-19 test came back positive. A 52-year-old woman from Pal also tested positive after returning from a wedding in Rajasthan.

In the last 24 hours, Gujarat has reported 30 new cases of COVID-19. The woman who died in Surat is suspected to have died of H3N2. Samples have been sent to Gandhinagar for testing.
