Surat: Young Mother's Organ Donation Offers Lifeline to Five People
In a Remarkable Act of Generosity, Brain-dead Woman's Family Consents to Organ Donation, Making a Difference in the Lives of Five Individuals
Surat, a city traditionally known for its generous spirit, is now gaining recognition as a hub of organ donors. In a recent heartwarming incident, a 24-year-old brain-dead woman from Godadara became the latest individual to contribute to this cause. Her donation of two kidneys, a liver, small intestine, and two hands is set to provide a new lease of life to four individuals and drastically improve the life of another. The young mother leaves behind a 3-year-old son.
Pritiben Shukla was admitted to Civil Hospital on June 3rd, with the doctors declaring her brain-dead after four days of treatment. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, Dr. Nilesh Kachadia, a member of the Soto team, explained the importance and impact of organ donation to her family.
Following detailed discussions, Pritiben's brother and father-in-law agreed to proceed with the organ donation, enabling the doctors to carry out the procedures. In a carefully coordinated effort, her hands and small intestine were transported to Global Hospital in Mumbai, while her liver and kidneys were sent to Apollo Hospital in Ahmedabad via air ambulance.
This gesture by the Shukla family underscores the spirit of humanity and selflessness. It also marks the 28th successful organ donation at Civil Hospital, reinforcing Surat's growing reputation as a leading city for organ donations in India.
Dr. Ketan Nayak, Resident Medical Officer of Civil Hospital, highlighted the momentum that organ donation activities have gained in the city, particularly at Civil Hospital. Pritiben's case is unique and historic, with her being the first individual to donate six organs at once at the hospital.
This incident follows another recent organ donation where a local family donated the organs of a young man, following his accidental death. The donations breathed new life into three individuals, including a young Muslim girl in Ahmedabad who received a heart transplant. These stories serve as a testament to Surat's commitment to saving and improving lives through organ donation.
