Rajkot: Electricity consumption increases in Saurashtra-Kutch, demand reaches 7280 megawatts due to heat
The Saurashtra-Kutch region has witnessed a sharp rise in electricity demand due to extreme heat. The increasing use of air conditioners, fans, and other cooling devices across Saurashtra, including Rajkot, has led to a continuous rise in electricity consumption.
On Tuesday, the highest demand of 7280 megawatts was recorded compared to the last eight days. According to sources in the energy department, if temperatures rise further, this demand could reach 8000 megawatts in the coming days. Currently, some power generation units in the Morbi area are not fully operational.
If they become active, the demand is expected to increase further. Officials at the load dispatch center located near Charania in Jetpur mentioned that electricity demand peaks every summer. Under normal circumstances, a demand of up to 8500 megawatts can be met without any disruption.
For any demand beyond that, additional electricity is purchased from the National Power Exchange, although such a need has not arisen yet. Officials also noted that there is a continuous increase in electricity generation from solar rooftop projects in Saurashtra, which is helping to balance local demand.
An increase in the use of solar energy is also being observed in industrial areas, which may reduce the need for private electricity purchases in the future. Overall, amidst rising heat, the electricity supply system remains balanced for now, but demand pressure may increase if temperatures rise further.
