Surat: Udhna Station Becomes 'Mini India', Over 18,000 Passengers Depart in 12 Hours
As the summer holidays begin, the exodus of migrant workers returning to their hometowns has intensified. This led to a heavy crowd at Udhna railway station starting Sunday night.
Within just 12 hours, over 18,000 passengers departed for their destinations via 7 trains, making the station resemble 'Mini India'. To manage the crowd, the railway administration implemented strict security measures. The station premises were transformed into a fortress, with around 400 personnel from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) deployed at the platforms and entrances.
Additionally, about 70 staff members were assigned duties for ticket checking and maintaining order. A special holding area and a large tent were set up outside the station, with barricading to send the crowd to the platform in a phased manner. To avoid long queues, the railway also opened 6 additional ticket counters with immediate effect.
The railway began operating trains from 5 AM, keeping passenger convenience in mind. Along with regular trains, several special trains were also operated, facilitating a large number of passengers traveling to Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal. For crowd management, the Western Railway used a high-tech system for the first time.
A special 'war room' was established at the headquarters to monitor every activity at the station live. This system was connected directly to the Ministry of Railways, allowing for central-level oversight of the situation. Senior railway officials were also present on-site.
The ADRM, DCM, and senior RPF officials assessed the arrangements on the ground and played a crucial role in managing the crowd. However, due to the heavy pressure, some arrangements were temporarily affected, but the administration's promptness helped stabilize the situation.
