Surat: Municipal Election Campaign Ends, Political Activity Intensifies Behind the Scenes

As the campaign for the Surat Municipal Corporation elections in 2026 comes to a halt, the city appears calm on the surface, but political activities have intensified behind the scenes. The competition remains particularly interesting in areas like Varachha-Katargam and Limbayat, where a tough contest is being observed among major political parties.

The Indian National Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) are engaged in a triangular contest for control of the Surat Municipal Corporation, which has a budget of over 10,000 crore rupees. However, the competition has become even more intriguing in Patidar-dominated areas like Varachha-Katargam. According to sources, dissatisfaction and internal differences have emerged in several places following ticket distribution, which is also affecting the final stages of the elections.

Candidates from major parties are now trying to reach voters not openly, but through internal strategies and personal contacts. Efforts to influence voters through door-to-door campaigning, small meetings, and community-based outreach campaigns have intensified in the final moments. Political analysts believe that these strategic moves in the last hours could impact the election results.

The lack of organizational experience is seen as a challenge for the BJP this time, leading many legislators to take charge in various areas. Meanwhile, there are also differences and dissatisfaction among candidates in the AAP.

Although the election campaign has ended, the political atmosphere in Surat remains heated. All eyes are now on the voting and the subsequent results, where it will become clear how much advantage the last-minute strategies have provided.
