Eye donation movement gains momentum in Rajkot, giving vision to hundreds
Rajkot – The pledge to spread light even after death is turning into a people’s movement in Rajkot, where eye donation rates are steadily rising thanks to the combined efforts of GT Seth Eye Hospital and the team at PDU Medical College. Over the past two years, the number of donations has increased from 1,000 to 1,464, providing new vision to more than 300 patients.
The ongoing National Eye Donation Fortnight, observed from August 25 to September 7, has significantly boosted awareness across the city and district. Assistant Professor Dr. Anjali Padaya said that donating eyes after death can illuminate the lives of the visually impaired. She urged citizens to shed superstitions, adopt a scientific outlook, and come forward for eye donation.
Dr. Padaya shared that in 2022–23, eyes of about 1,000 deceased persons were donated, which rose to 1,464 in 2024–25. Out of these, 169 patients regained vision, 147 benefitted through medical treatment, while 791 eyes contributed to research studies.
Guided by department head Dr. Kamalsinh Dodia, the hospital team has been actively raising awareness among patients and families about blindness prevention, eye donation, and treatment of eye diseases. The team includes Dr. Haresh Gadhia, Dr. Neetiben Sheth, Dr. Falguni Trivedi, Dr. Chetna, and several staff members.
As per agency report, experts highlight that two techniques are available for corneal transplants: therapeutic methods, which help in controlling infections, and optical methods, which restore sight to patients. Families willing to donate the eyes of a deceased loved one can contact the toll-free number 1919 for assistance.
The growing eye donation movement in Rajkot stands as an example of how awareness and collective efforts can bring about social change. This initiative is not only bringing new light to those suffering from blindness but also spreading a profound message of service to humanity.
