Surat: Sardar Market Labourers Threaten Strike from May 16 Over Wage Hike Demand
Surat: Labourers working in the onion and potato section of the Sardar Market at Surat Agricultural Produce Market (APMC) may go on strike starting May 16, demanding an increase in wages.
Surat City INTUC (Indian National Trade Union Congress) has issued a final warning to the market management, stating that if an official announcement of wage revision is not made by May 15, all workers will stop work and go on strike the following day.
Notably, INTUC had earlier written to the market management on April 15, highlighting that wages have not been revised in the past 10 years. The workers are demanding a hike of ₹4 per sack.
INTUC Surat President Umashankar Mishra and spokesperson Shaan Khan stated that a letter had recently been submitted to the market authorities requesting the wage increase, but no satisfactory response has been received so far.
As a result, the union has now issued a final ultimatum. If the demand is not met by May 15, all labourers in the concerned section will cease operations from May 16 as part of the strike.
