Surat: On May 12, International Nurses Day - Nurses of Civil Hospital Become Examples of Service and Dedication

On the occasion of International Nurses Day celebrated on May 12, the stories of service, dedication, and humanity of two nurses from New Civil Hospital in Surat have emerged as an inspiration for people. Sajidaben Chand, working as the head nurse in the Emergency Trauma Center, and staff nurse Sushila Kumari Patel are not only caring for patients but also setting an example for society with their sensitive behavior and selfless service.

Sajidaben Chand, who has been dedicated to service for 26 years, has been working in nursing for the past 26 years and has been responsible for the head nurse position at the trauma center of New Civil Hospital for the last four years. In the extremely busy and sensitive department of the trauma center, she is engaged in serving patients day and night. Sajidaben mentions that every moment in the trauma center is challenging.

Patients from road accidents, fire incidents, suicide attempts, and those severely injured are brought here. Many times, upon receiving news of major accidents late at night, she has to rush to the hospital immediately. Remembering the days of the COVID pandemic, she said that during Ramadan, she had to wear PPE kits and serve patients for hours while fasting.

She stated that their only objective was for every patient to return home healthy. Sajidaben believes that patients receive relief not only from medications but also from sensitive behavior and a few loving words. Especially when a young patient dies in an accident, managing the family becomes the most difficult responsibility.

Sushila Kumari Patel, a staff nurse at New Civil Hospital, is presenting a unique example of service and motherhood. Recently returning to duty after maternity leave, Sushila Kumari, who lives in Limodra village of Mangrol taluka, has a child who is only nine months old. While she constantly worries about her newborn as a mother, she also fulfills her responsibility of serving the patients coming to the hospital.

Sushila Kumari says that when she steps into the hospital, serving patients becomes her top priority. Sushila Kumari is not limited to just caring for patients; she also regularly donates her breast milk to the milk bank at New Civil Hospital. Her contribution is proving to be life-saving for newborns whose mothers are unable to provide them with sufficient milk for various reasons.

She explained that mother's milk is the best nutrition for enhancing children's immunity and overall development. She expressed her emotions by saying that if her milk is providing life and nutrition to a needy child, there is no greater joy for her.

Nurses like Sajidaben Chand and Sushila Kumari Patel from Surat Civil Hospital are proving that nursing is not just a profession but the greatest service to humanity. Even amidst personal life, family, and individual responsibilities, they are faithfully embodying the principle of 'Seva Parmo Dharma'.
