Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Had Intended to Write Biography of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, April 14, 2025 — Renowned author Baba Bhand revealed on Monday that Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, had once expressed a strong desire to write the biography of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad of Baroda. As per agency report, this aspiration was documented in a letter dated October 10, 1950, written by Ambedkar to Sayajirao's grandson, Pratapsinhrao Gaekwad.
According to Bhand, he came across the letter five years ago and has since included it in his book titled "Maharaja Sayajirao and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar." In the letter, Dr. Ambedkar acknowledged the instrumental role the Maharaja played in shaping his future. He wrote that Sayajirao Gaekwad had enabled him to pursue higher education, which later allowed him to rise to prominence in public life.
Ambedkar referred to the Maharaja as his patron and credited him for transforming his destiny. He expressed deep gratitude and wrote that writing about Sayajirao’s life would be the only way he could attempt to repay the debt he owed him.
In his letter, Ambedkar emphasized that Sayajirao Gaekwad played a significant role in Indian history, both as an individual and as a ruler. He stressed that it would be unfortunate if the life of such a remarkable personality were to remain undocumented.
Baba Bhand stated that had Ambedkar completed the biography, it would have offered deeper insights into the unique relationship between Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad and Dr. Ambedkar, illuminating an important chapter of modern Indian history.
