Family Accuses Doctors of Overcharging and Mismanagement

Surat : Alleged Medical Negligence at Shelby Hospital Leads to Death of Navsari Man

Surat, February 6 – The family of 33-year-old Kaushik Patel, a resident of Navsari, has accused Shelby Hospital, Surat, and Dr. Jeni Gandhi of medical negligence, claiming that despite charging them ₹20 lakh for treatment, doctors failed to save his life.

According to the family, Kaushik Patel, a medical representative in a pharmaceutical company, was initially diagnosed with a minor kidney stone issue. However, due to alleged misdiagnosis and repeated surgeries, his condition deteriorated, ultimately leading to his death on December 14, 2024.

A Simple Case Turns Fatal After Six Surgeries

The incident began on November 15, 2024, when Kaushik complained of severe abdominal pain. He underwent an ultrasound at Vansda, and later, doctors at Sardar Patel Hospital, Navsari, confirmed that his condition was not critical but might require surgery. Seeking further medical consultation, the family took him to INS Hospital, Navsari, where additional tests were conducted.

On November 16, Dr. Jeni Gandhi examined Kaushik Patel and diagnosed a blood clot between his heart arteries and intestines, recommending the insertion of a special catheter costing ₹9 lakh. However, the next day, doctors changed their decision and suggested thrombolysis treatment instead.

On November 17, Dr. Gandhi performed the first surgery, but Kaushik's condition worsened, leading to his referral to Shelby Hospital, Surat.

Repeated Surgeries, Amputation, and Tragic End

The family alleges that despite knowing the deteriorating condition of Kaushik, the hospital subjected him to six different surgeries, which further worsened his health. Eventually, on December 6, doctors amputated his leg, citing severe infection. However, by then, the infection had spread too much, leading to his demise on December 14.

Kaushik’s family has lodged a formal complaint with the Navsari Superintendent of Police and Gujarat Medical Council, accusing Dr. Jeni Gandhi and Shelby Hospital of negligence and excessive treatment costs. They are demanding strict action against the doctors responsible, ensuring such incidents do not happen again in the future.
