Surat Airport Development Discussed in High-Level Meeting Between Chamber of Commerce and AAI Director

Surat, May 6 – The Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) held a high-level interactive meeting on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at 4:00 PM with Anand Sharma, Director of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) at Surat Airport. The objective of the meeting was to discuss key infrastructural and operational issues concerning entrepreneurs of Surat and South Gujarat, with a focus on accelerating the development of the city’s airport.

In his welcome address, SGCCI President Vijay Mevawala emphasized Surat’s pivotal role in India’s economy, highlighting the export of diamonds, textiles, and agricultural products from South Gujarat to various parts of India and abroad. He stressed the urgent need for strengthening air, road, and water transportation infrastructure to further boost export activities. Mevawala also presented a detailed proposal urging the AAI to expedite the launch of international air cargo services from Surat.

Responding to the concerns, Airport Director Anand Sharma assured the audience that a dedicated infant care room and a modern executive lounge would soon be established at Surat Airport. He also shared that parking fees would be displayed in Hindi, English, and Gujarati to assist drivers and enhance accessibility.

Sharma reiterated AAI’s commitment to equipping Surat Airport with all necessary passenger amenities and confirmed ongoing efforts to meet the expectations of the city’s growing aviation needs.

During the session, Chamber members raised key issues including the need for improved parking management, organized taxi tracks, promotion of digital travel services, the availability of 24x7 airport operations, and the introduction of e-visa facilities. A suggestion was also made to establish a prepaid taxi counter at the airport to improve convenience for passengers.

Newly elected SGCCI President Nikhil Madrasi extended a formal vote of thanks to all attendees. The meeting was also attended by Sunil Kumar, Assistant General Manager of Engineering at AAI, Honorary Secretary Nirav Mandalewala, Vice President Ashok Jirawala, Aviation Committee Patron Rajnikant Marfatia, Advisor Manoj Singapuri, and Committee Chairman Linesh Shah.

This meeting marked a constructive step toward the growth of Surat Airport and is expected to play a significant role in fostering international trade from South Gujarat.
