Sarthana Nature Park: A Thriving Wildlife Haven in Surat
Surat – Spread across 81 acres, Sarthana Nature Park, operated by Surat Municipal Corporation, stands as a prominent tourist attraction for visitors from North and South Gujarat. Known for its efforts in wildlife conservation and tranquil environment, the park welcomes over a million visitors annually. Housing 54 species, it features 24 mammal species (128 individuals), 27 bird species (294 individuals), and 5 reptile species (61 individuals).
Dr. Rajesh Patel, Superintendent of Sarthana Nature Park, highlighted the park’s unique contribution to the conservation of otters. “Unlike most Indian zoos, we have dedicated facilities for 27 otters in captivity. Scientific management results in 5-7 otter pups born each year, with 17 otters already transferred to other zoos,” said Dr. Patel.
The park has also been a significant source of revenue. In 2022, it earned ₹2.56 crore from 9.41 lakh visitors, while 2023 recorded ₹2.76 crore from 8.78 lakh visitors. As of 2024, ₹1.74 crore has been generated from 6.22 lakh visitors. The busiest seasons are during Diwali and summer vacations.
Animals like white tigers, lions, bears, and hippopotamuses remain the key attractions. The park, adhering to guidelines from the Central Zoo Authority (CZA), undergoes biennial inspections. It also hosts around 2 lakh students annually and employs 40 staff members to ensure smooth operations and visitor safety.
Focus on Environmental Education
Heena Patel, a guide at the zoo, emphasized its primary aim: instilling environmental awareness in children. "Through year-round educational and awareness programs, we aim to spark an interest in wildlife and nature among children,” she stated. School groups frequently visit the park to learn about CZA management practices and the significance of wildlife conservation.
Kiran Singh Solanki, a teacher from Kosamba’s Little Millen School, shared, “We bring students here to learn about nature and wildlife through experiential methods. The facilities are excellent, making learning enjoyable and memorable for children.”
Anjali Majethia, a frequent visitor, praised the park, saying, “This is the only place in Surat where we can see such a diverse range of animals and birds. For just ₹30, we get to experience greenery, wildlife, and a forest-like ambiance.”
Sarthana Nature Park continues to serve as an educational and recreational hotspot, fostering a deeper connection with nature for all age groups.
