Surat: The Project Yashoda Human Milk Bank, located at Surat's SMIMER Hospital, recently marked its 16th anniversary, celebrating a significant milestone in its mission to save newborn lives. Over the past 16 years, the bank has collected breast milk from nearly 9,000 mothers, providing life-saving nourishment to more than 8,500 newborns.
On September 1, 2024, a human milk donation camp was organized at Shantam Hall, supported by Surat Municipal Corporation’s SMIMER Medical College, Surat Pediatric Association Charitable Trust (SPACT), Rotary Club of Surat Sea Face, and other NGOs. The event saw an impressive turnout, with 127 mothers voluntarily donating their breast milk. Local MP Mukesh Dalal also attended the event and praised the efforts of the milk bank.
Breast Milk is Like Nectar: Dr. Mahesh Patel, President of SPACT, and Dr. Ashwini Shah, Secretary of SPACT, emphasized the importance of breast milk as the best source of nutrition for newborns. "Through this camp, we aim to raise awareness about the significance of mother's milk," they said, expressing their gratitude to all the donor mothers.
Scientific Preservation of Milk: The donated milk is scientifically processed, pasteurized, and stored in refrigerated conditions, allowing it to be used for up to six months. This milk is provided to newborns whose mothers are unable to breastfeed.
Promoting Nutrition and Health: Camps like these play a crucial role in promoting nutrition and health in the community. The Surat Pediatric Association Charitable Trust, SMIMER Medical College, Surat Municipal Corporation, and other supporting organizations have been pivotal in this noble cause.
