Surat Municipal Corporation Investigates Spice Vendors for Adulteration

As the summer season begins, prompting households to stock up on spices, the Food and Health Department in Surat has taken action to ensure the quality of spices sold by vendors. The department conducted raids on spice vendors across all zones, collecting samples for testing and carrying out on-site inspections. Legal action will be taken if any samples are found to be adulterated or fail quality tests.

The Surat Municipal Health Department organized food safety officers to inspect spice vendors in each zone and collect samples. These samples have been sent to a laboratory for testing. Separate teams are being formed within each zone to check on spice vendors and send samples to the laboratory for analysis. Legal action will be taken against any vendor found to be selling adulterated products.

Health Officer Dr. Ashish Nayak informed that on Wednesday, 17 spice samples were collected by Food Safety officials from a total of nine locations where spices were being sold in open-air markets. Further action will be taken based on the test reports from the lab, determining whether any color chemicals were used in the spices or not. A food van has also been deployed to conduct on-site inspections, and immediate action will be taken if any discrepancies are found.
