35 Gujarati Fishermen to be Released from Pakistan Jails

Ahmedabad, April 26: Relief for families of fishermen in Gujarat as 35 fishermen detained in Pakistan are set to be released on April 30. The fishermen, along with one civilian, will be handed over to Indian authorities at the Wagah Border on May 2nd.

This news comes after the Pakistan government released the list of detainees scheduled for release. Jeevanbhai Jungi, former president of the Porbandar Boat Association, confirmed the names which include Vijay Mohan, a Khalasi from Porbandar, and 34 other fishermen from Gujarat. The identity of the civilian being released is yet to be confirmed.

Jungi informed that the released fishermen were held captive by Pakistani Marines for periods ranging from one and a half to two years. Their capture occurred while they were engaged in fishing activities. While this release brings some relief, it's important to note that 154 Indian fishermen remain in Pakistani jails. There are ongoing demands for the release of all detainees.

Jungi further added that nearly 1200 fishing boats belonging to Indian fishermen are still in Pakistan's possession. This news comes after a series of releases in 2023. 80 fishermen were released before Diwali in November, followed by the release of 399 fishermen in two phases during June and July.
