Surat Goes Smart: Prepaid Electricity Meters Rolled Out

Residents to Enjoy Convenience and Real-Time Usage Monitoring

Surat Goes Smart: Prepaid Electricity Meters Rolled Out

Surat, a leading Smart City in India, is taking another step towards a tech-savvy future with the installation of prepaid smart meters for electricity connections. This initiative by the Dakshin Gujarat Vij Company Limited (DGVCL) promises a convenient and transparent electricity billing system for residents.

The new system utilizes pre-paid smart meters that connect to a mobile application. Consumers can monitor their real-time electricity usage and recharge the meter as needed through the app. This eliminates the need for physical meter readings and monthly bills.

The rollout began in Piplod's Suman Shell Apartment, with 44 houses receiving smart meters on the first day. DGVCL has assured residents of a smooth transition, with clear communication about meter changes and recharge options. Notably, the project aims to install a staggering 40 lakh smart meters across the entire city, encompassing residential units, government offices, and transformers.

Benefits and Features:

  • Prepaid Convenience: Consumers enjoy the flexibility of topping up their electricity balance as needed.
  • Real-Time Monitoring: The mobile app provides real-time data on electricity consumption, allowing users to manage usage efficiently.
  • Low Balance Alerts: Timely alerts inform consumers when their balance dips low, preventing power cuts.
  • Night and Holiday Protection: Power supply remains uninterrupted during nights and holidays even with low balance.
  • Multiple Recharge Options: Recharge options include online payments using credit cards for added convenience.
  • Tenant Friendly: The app allows tenants to manage their electricity usage and recharge the meter seamlessly.

This innovative project by DGVCL promises to revolutionize electricity consumption patterns in Surat. By empowering consumers with real-time monitoring and flexible recharge options, smart meters offer a win-win situation for both residents and the power company.
