Flamingos Flock to Surat's Warmer Shores

Shifting Climate Brings Kutch's State Bird to the City's Coast

Flamingos Flock to Surat's Warmer Shores

In a surprising turn of events, flamingos, Gujarat's state bird and a resident of the Kutch region, have been spotted in large numbers on the beaches of Surat. Wildlife experts attribute this unusual migration to the city's hot-cold mixed climate, which offers a welcome respite from the extreme cold of their usual habitat during winter.

While seagulls are known to seek warmer regions like Surat to escape harsh winters, flamingos typically migrate from Kutch to coastal areas like Surat, Navsari, and Mumbai in search of food for their young. These vibrant birds travel in large, social groups, creating a breathtaking spectacle.

According to wildlife photographer Vijayendra Desai, these graceful creatures are not just a feast for the eyes. They also perform a unique "mating dance" where they turn a deeper shade of pink to attract potential partners. Interestingly, some flamingos can even use their plumage to blend into their environment, a natural camouflage technique for defense.

While flamingos were previously sighted in Surat's Tapi riverbank areas, they've seemingly relocated to the less crowded beaches of Dumas. Their return to Kutch for breeding season is expected in the months of May and June. This unexpected avian visitation highlights the complex interplay between climate and animal behavior.
