Shade Collapse at Cricket Box in Surat's Katargam-Dabholi Area Sparks Safety Concerns
Surat: A major mishap was narrowly avoided on Sunday afternoon in Surat’s Katargam-Dabholi area when the shade of a cricket box named ‘Dot Ball’ collapsed during a game, sending dozens of young players scrambling for safety. Only one youth sustained minor injuries, while others escaped unscathed. The incident prompted several players to share relieved messages on social media, such as "We survived."
Being a Sunday, the cricket facility was crowded with local youth. Around midday, as strong winds swept through the area, the large shade structure suddenly gave way. The sudden collapse caused panic, with players fleeing the scene. Some attempted to hold the falling structure with their hands, but one youth was struck on the shoulder by a falling pipe. Fortunately, his injuries were not serious.
As per agency report, upon receiving information about the incident, a team from the Katargam Fire Station, led by officer Ramesh Taylor, rushed to the site. By the time they arrived, all players had safely evacuated. However, personal belongings such as mobile phones, keys, and other items had been buried under the debris. The fire brigade carefully recovered these items and returned them to their owners.
The cricket box was reportedly rented by a youth named Fenil Patel, who had gone there with friends to play cricket. Fire officials conducted a preliminary assessment of the collapsed shade, including an inspection of its structural integrity and adherence to construction standards. Further investigation and necessary actions have been promised.
This incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of privately operated sports and entertainment facilities like cricket boxes. Authorities and property owners have been urged to conduct mandatory structural inspections of such establishments to prevent future accidents. The mishap served as a stark reminder that poor structural planning and oversight can lead to life-threatening situations.
