Surat Gears Up for Greener Commute: 1,000 Electric Buses by 2025, PM to Flag Off First 50

Surat : Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) is revving up its green mission with plans to deploy 1,000 electric buses for public transport by 2025. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will symbolically flag off the first 50 of these new buses equipped with enhanced features on February 22nd.

More Spacious, Smarter Travel:

These 12-meter-long electric buses from JBM offer a significant upgrade over the existing fleet. With a seating capacity of 33 passengers compared to the current 26, they provide more legroom and a more comfortable commute.

Safety and Security:

Safety and security are prioritized with a full camera system covering both the front and back of the buses. Additionally, a GPS-based tracking system ensures real-time monitoring and passenger safety.

Phasing Out Fossil Fuels:

The initiative aligns with SMC's commitment to phasing out diesel-powered CTbus and BRTS buses by December 2025. Currently, the city's fleet comprises over 700 buses, including electric, BRTS, and city buses, of which 497 are diesel-powered. This transition to a cleaner energy source promotes environmental sustainability and reduces air pollution.

More to Come:

Following the initial batch of 50, another 100 electric buses are expected to arrive next month. SMC had previously ordered a total of 600 electric buses in phases, with 250 already operational.

Chairman's Perspective:

Somnath Marathe, Chairman of the Transport Committee of SMC, recently inspected the new buses and the charging infrastructure. He emphasized the importance of this initiative not only for a greener Surat but also for enhancing the comfort and safety of public transportation.

This large-scale deployment of electric buses signifies Surat's dedication to becoming a smart and sustainable city. With PM Modi's participation in the launch, this project gains national attention and serves as an example for other cities to follow in their efforts towards cleaner and more efficient public transportation systems.
