Broken Gates, Broken Promises: Surat's BRTS Plagued by Private Vehicles, Negligence
Despite swing gates and complaints, careless drivers breach BRTS lanes, risking accidents and raising safety concerns
The Surat Municipal Corporation's (SMC) Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) faces a growing threat: private vehicles illegally accessing the dedicated lanes. Despite swing gates installed at significant cost and recent complaints to the police, reckless drivers continue to flout the rules, endangering public safety and raising concerns about the system's effectiveness.
The issue came to light recently when a car driving on the wrong side at Godadara Dindoli BRTS route rammed into a swing gate, causing damage worth Rs. 50,000. While the BRTS supervisor filed a complaint, this isn't an isolated incident. The report highlights similar violations near Udhna Jeevan Jyot bus stand, where vehicles blatantly entered the BRTS lane despite operational swing gates.
These recurring breaches expose a troubling reality. Despite crores spent on swing gates and standing committee recommendations, enforcement remains lax. The Municipal Corporation and the police seem to be falling short, leading to a climate of impunity for violators.
Adding to the problem is the lack of public awareness and traffic sense. Pedestrians and cyclists using the BRTS lane are at constant risk due to private vehicles entering illegally. This negligence could lead to a major accident, jeopardizing the safety of not just BRTS users but also other road users.
The current situation demands immediate action. The SMC and the police need to collaborate on stricter enforcement measures, including hefty fines and stricter penalties for violators. Additionally, public awareness campaigns are crucial to educate citizens about the importance of respecting dedicated lanes and ensuring road safety.
The BRTS was implemented to provide a safe and efficient public transportation system. However, continued disregard for the rules undermines its very purpose. Only through coordinated efforts and a commitment to enforcement can the SMC ensure the safety of its citizens and protect the integrity of its BRTS system.
