Surat Cracks Down on Banned Plastic Suppliers, Seizes Over 15,000 kg in a Month
City-Wide Raids Target Stockists, Eco Polymer Fined in Bhestan
The Surat Municipal Corporation's (SMC) health department has scored a significant victory in its fight against banned plastic, thanks to a strategic shift in focus. Instead of targeting individual hawkers and vendors, the department is now targeting the source – plastic suppliers and stockists. This approach has proved particularly successful in Udhna zone, which has spearheaded the campaign by seizing and destroying over 15,000 kg of banned plastic in just one month.
Previously, the SMC primarily penalized vegetable markets and lorry drivers caught using banned plastic. However, this failed to address the root cause – the continuous supply of illegal plastic. Since January 2024, the department has adopted a new strategy, focusing on apprehending major suppliers and stockists across the city. This shift has yielded impressive results, with over 20,000 kg of banned plastic confiscated city-wide between January 1st and February 11th.
Udhna zone stands out as a shining example, boasting over 15,000 kg of banned plastic seized solely within its territory. This commitment was further demonstrated last Friday with the confiscation and destruction of 3,410 kg of banned plastic from Khatodara Jai Hanuman Industrial Estate in Udhna. On Monday, the zone continued its momentum, seizing 900 kg of single-use plastic from Eco Polymer, an organization in Bhestan's Silk City Industry. Additionally, Eco Polymer received a ₹50,000 fine and was forced to provide a guarantee against future violations.
The success in Udhna highlights the potential of replicating this approach across other zones. Implementing similar raids on plastic stockists city-wide could significantly curb the availability and usage of banned plastic in Surat. The SMC's proactive strategy provides a glimmer of hope for a cleaner and more sustainable future for the city.
