Surat : A Milestone Achievement as Wolves Welcome Two Healthy Cubs, Marking a First for the Nature Park
In a momentous occasion at Sarthana Nature Park, located in the Sarthana area of Surat city, an Asian wolf has given birth to two healthy cubs, marking the first successful breeding of its kind in the park since its establishment in 2003.
The breeding program, initiated as part of the Animal Regulation Programme, saw a pair of wolves transported from Jaipur Zoo to Sarthana Nature Park in July of the previous year. In exchange for this pair, Surat Nature Park provided Jaipur Zoo with a pair of water cats.
During the crucial breeding season from October to January, the imported wolves were given complete privacy in their enclosure. Recognizing the female wolf's pregnancy, which typically lasts between 60 to 72 days, the caretakers promptly moved her to a new cage equipped with an artificial den.
On January 4th, the eagerly awaited moment arrived as the female wolf gave birth to two healthy cubs in the specially crafted den. The significance of this event was further emphasized when it was revealed that the cubs had opened their eyes, indicating their healthy and active status.
Hinaben, a representative of the Nature Park, expressed excitement about the upcoming opportunity for visitors to witness the female wolf emerge from the den with her offspring. However, she emphasized the need for caution, as access to the cage is currently restricted to ensure the safety of the wolf family. The temporary restriction aims to prevent any potential harm to the cubs, especially if the mother becomes protective or agitated.
