Surat Cracks Down on Bus Accidents: Zero Tolerance Policy Tightens Screws on Drivers, Agencies

Surat : Alarmed by a spate of accidents involving city buses and BRTS buses, the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has unveiled a stringent "Zero Accident Policy" with zero tolerance for any violations. The new rules, finalized after discussions with officials and bus operator contractors, promise tough consequences for drivers, conductors, and even agencies in case of accidents.

Stronger Accountability:

The focus of the policy is on tightening accountability measures across the board. Some key changes include:

  • Enhanced Driver and Conductor Qualifications: Drivers and conductors will undergo stricter scrutiny, including breath analyzer tests and background checks. Failure to meet fitness or character requirements will lead to immediate dismissal.
  • Crackdown on Unsafe Practices: Speeding, dropping passengers outside designated stops, and operating buses without digital boards will all be treated as serious offenses. Violations will trigger police action and potential blacklisting of agencies.
  • Zero Tolerance for Financial Misconduct: If a vigilance team catches a conductor without a ticket, both the conductor and the agency will face prosecution for financial embezzlement, potentially leading to job termination.
  • Accident Management: In case of accidents, regardless of severity, criminal charges will be filed against the driver and the agency. SMC will also work with police to expedite action against drivers involved in theft or assault.

Compensation and Assistance:

The policy recognizes the human cost of accidents and outlines plans for swift support to victims. Families of those killed will receive compensation, while the injured will be provided financial assistance.

Commitment to Safety:

Mayor Dakshesh Mavani, Standing Committee Chairman Rajan Patel, and other officials at the policy unveiling emphasized SMC's unwavering commitment to public safety. They declared that the new rules are designed to deter violations and create a safer transportation environment for Surat residents.

The implementation of the Zero Accident Policy remains to be seen, but its strictness and comprehensive nature signal a proactive approach from SMC. Whether it translates into a safer reality for Surat's streets will depend on effective enforcement and a sustained commitment to accountability.
