UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, recently declared Garba an intangible cultural heritage, adding to its prestige and solidifying its place in the world's cultural tapestry.
In celebration of this momentous occasion, a live telecast of the ceremony organized by UNESCO in Botswana was held at the Performing Arts Center of Adajan, Surat. Mrs. Sonalben Desai, Chairperson of the Cultural Committee of the Municipal Corporation, graced the event with her presence.
The recognition by UNESCO has ignited a sense of pride and joy among millions of Gujaratis worldwide. Garba is more than just a dance; it embodies the unique unity and cultural heritage of Gujarat and India. By rising above social divides of caste, religion, language, and dialect, Garba fosters social harmony and strengthens community life. To celebrate Garba's newfound global status, students in Surat danced with joyous abandon. Joining the festivities were Assistant Commissioner (Rander Zone) Parulben Rana, Head of the Cultural Department and Assistant Commissioner Gayatriben Jariwala, Deputy Accountant Jyotiben Rana, school students, and various municipal department officials and employees.
