Dumad Gram Panchayat in Vadodara Shows the Way in Solid Waste Management
Village Sets an Example for Others in the State with its Innovative Initiatives
Dumad Gram Panchayat in Vadodara Tehsil is doing exemplary work in the field of solid waste management, inspiring other villages in the state. The village started its solid waste management program in collaboration with CSR and the 'Kachre Se Azadi Foundation' on April 1, 2019. The Gram Panchayat took over the responsibility of the program in April 2021.
The Gram Panchayat has allotted a dedicated space for solid waste management, and workers are paid for their services. Awareness campaigns have been conducted to educate villagers about the importance of segregating dry and wet waste. As a result, villagers are now segregating waste at the household level.
The Gram Panchayat collects wet and dry waste separately from over 1380 households in the village. Wet waste is processed in a rocket composter, mixed with bacterial culture, and kept for 30 days in a compost pit. The resulting compost is distributed to farmers in the village.
Dry waste is segregated into seven categories and then baled in a baling machine. The baled waste is sent to companies in Anand and Ahmedabad, which use it to make bricks and benches.
The Dumad Gram Panchayat's solid waste management program is a model for other villages in the state. It shows that with public participation and innovative initiatives, it is possible to achieve effective solid waste management even in rural areas.
The Gujarat government has decided to extend the 'Swachhta Hi Seva' campaign for two more months to make the state more beautiful and clean. The Dumad Gram Panchayat's success story in solid waste management can inspire other villages in the state to join the campaign and make a meaningful contribution to building a cleaner and more sustainable Gujarat.
