Plan to Shift Athawa Police Station from Municipal Museum Underway in Surat
Surat's authorities are considering relocating the Athawa police station from the Municipal Historical Museum to the government premises in Rudarpura, amid concerns over congestion and space shortages.
In Surat, the plan to shift the Athawa police station from its current location in the Municipal Historical Museum is gaining momentum. The existing space is becoming increasingly congested and inadequate, leading to a proposal to move the station to a government-owned site in the Rudarpura area.
Initial Relocation and Growing Challenges
The Athawa police station was initially relocated to the Municipal Historical Museum following the restoration of Surat's historical fort. However, with the passage of time, the space has become cramped and is struggling to accommodate growing traffic, leading to the need for a new location.
A Proposed Solution and Inspection
Councilor Vrajesh Undakat proposed in the standing committee that shifting the police station from its current site would free up space for the municipal corporation to regain use of the museum. Following the proposal, police officers, along with municipal officials and councilors, conducted an inspection of the site in Rudarpura, identified for the relocation of the eighth police station.
The site inspection focused on the pressure around the proposed land, with action planned to remove the surrounding obstacles. The process for the transfer of the police station will commence once the area is cleared.
Obstacles and Potential Actions
However, the transfer has been delayed due to pressure regarding the land near Prakash Bakery in Rudarpura, marked for the Athawa police station. A thorough inspection was conducted by permanent member Brijesh Undkat, corporator Ashok Randeria, and municipal officials.
The examination revealed that implementing the road line applicable to the location could potentially open up the road. As a result, there have been discussions to demolish a residential property, including three shops, to clear the way for the new police station.
The ongoing exercise to shift the Athawa police station reflects Surat's efforts to respond to the city's changing needs and infrastructure challenges. While the relocation is a complex process involving various legal and logistical considerations, the move aims to enhance efficiency and space utilization. The proposed shift symbolizes the city's commitment to adapting its public services to better serve its residents, although the process is expected to be marked by ongoing discussions and careful planning.
