Surat: Knee Problems Increased Fivefold Due to Changing Lifestyle: Expert
A special seminar on knee pain and its modern treatments was held during the 41st program of the public awareness health series organized by the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI). Dr. Chinmay Desai, an orthopedic and robotic joint replacement surgeon from the renowned SEEDS Hospital in Surat, provided detailed information on the increasing cases of knee diseases, their causes, and various treatment options.
At the beginning of the program, SGCCI President Nikhil Madarasi stated that the aim of the health series is to raise health awareness among people and educate them about disease prevention. He also appreciated the contribution of the chairperson of the public health committee, Parulben Vadgama. Dr. Chinmay Desai mentioned that changing lifestyles, reduced physical activity, increasing obesity, and excessive consumption of ultra-processed foods are major causes of knee problems.
He noted that in the last 10 years, cases of knee-related diseases have increased nearly fivefold. Previously, knee arthritis was typically seen after the age of 50, but now this issue is emerging in individuals aged 30 to 40. In many cases, knee pain is also being observed in teenagers and young adults.
Additionally, injuries, infections, muscle weakness, and arthritis are also major causes of pain. Dr. Desai categorized knee pain into three main stages: early stage, where pain occurs occasionally and resolves with rest; moderate stage, where pain is felt regularly but does not affect daily activities; and advanced stage, where pain becomes unbearable and severely impacts mobility and quality of life. He emphasized that weight loss and physiotherapy are the most effective measures, stating that physiotherapy is the cornerstone of knee treatment as it strengthens muscles and reduces pressure on joints.
He explained that even a 5% reduction in body weight can significantly decrease the load on the knees. If relief is not achieved through medication and exercise, options such as steroids, hyaluronic acid, and PRP injections can be considered, which typically last for three to six months. Regarding the increasing use of modern surgery and robotic technology, Dr. Desai mentioned that surgery may be necessary when pain begins to affect normal daily activities.
Currently, modern surgical techniques such as osteotomy, partial knee replacement, and total knee replacement are available. He noted that robotic surgery offers greater precision in operations and relatively faster recovery for patients. However, after one year, the results of traditional and robotic surgeries are found to be nearly the same.
Dr. Desai urged citizens not to ignore the early symptoms of knee pain and to seek advice only from qualified and specialized doctors for any treatment. He also stated that habits like alcohol and smoking negatively impact bone health and the recovery process, making it essential to avoid them.
At the end of the program, a question-and-answer session was held, where attendees asked various questions related to knee pain, injection therapy, surgery, and recovery. Dr. Chinmay Desai provided detailed and expert answers to all the questions.
