Surat: The Municipal Corporation gets new 'captains': Maya Mawani becomes the new Mayor of the city, Rajan Patel again takes charge of the Standing Committee
Surat. After prolonged discussions, political equations, and speculations about repetition and non-repetition, the names of the new officials of the Surat Municipal Corporation have finally been announced.
Nearly a month after the election results, the Bharatiya Janata Party announced appointments to key positions including Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and Standing Committee Chairman. Despite winning a significant majority with a remarkable victory in 115 out of 120 seats, the BJP had to deliberate extensively over the selection of officials. After extensive discussions at the organizational and leadership levels, final consensus on the names was reached.
According to the announced names, Maya Mawani has been elected as the new Mayor of Surat city. Sudhakar Chaudhary has been entrusted with the responsibility of Deputy Mayor. Rajan Bakul Patel has been reappointed as the Chairman of the Standing Committee, which is considered the most influential in the municipal corporation.
Additionally, Alpaben Mehlan has been appointed as the Ruling Party Leader and Urmila Tripathi as the Whip. The members of the Standing Committee include Rajan Patel (Chairman), Dharmesh Bhalala, Keyur Patel, Suhani Yadav, Suman Devi Garg, Mahendra Desai, Kavita Anugulla, Keeta Desai, Manu Balar, Raju Priyadarshini, Sangeeta Parmar, and Anita Rana. The most discussion in political circles has been around the name of the Standing Committee Chairman.
According to sources, there was prolonged deliberation and tug-of-war between the organization and leadership regarding this position. Ultimately, the party decided to trust Rajan Patel again, prioritizing experience and balance.
Despite having such a large majority, there were various discussions in political corridors regarding the delay in the announcement of names. However, with the announcement of the new officials, the formal beginning of the new term in the Surat Municipal Corporation has now taken place.
