Surat: Metro Project Gains Momentum, Trial Run Begins on Second Corridor
The Surat Metro Project, which residents and the administration have been eagerly awaiting, is now gradually moving towards its final phase. Following a successful trial run on the first corridor, the trial run for the metro train on the second corridor has also commenced.
The official trial run on the second corridor of Surat Metro began on Thursday from Ugat Canal Road. During this period, the metro train will be operated continuously for about 500 hours to thoroughly examine its technical capabilities, safety standards, and operational systems. Experts from Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) and GEC will conduct testing at various levels.
After the trial process is completed, necessary technical tests will be conducted by the country's leading organization, Research Designs and Standards Organization (RDSO), and other regulatory agencies. In the final phase, after safety inspection and approval from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), metro services will be launched for the public in Surat. According to GMRC, the total length of both corridors of the Surat Metro Project is 40.35 kilometers, with an estimated cost of around ₹12,020 crores.
More than 75 percent of the project work has been completed so far. The entire project includes a total of 38 metro stations and two major depots — Dream City Depot and Bhesan Depot. Previously, on March 29, 2026, a trial run was initiated on an 8.5-kilometer route between Dream City and Althan Tenement Station under Corridor-1 (North-South Corridor), which includes 7 stations, and the technical verification and testing process is currently ongoing there.
Now, after the civil work for a 6.5-kilometer route and 7 new stations under Corridor-2 (East-West Corridor) has been completed, the trial run has also begun here. This raises hopes that the wait for metro services in Surat will not be much longer.
