Surat: Double Decker Electric Bus Trial Run on Surat Streets Amid Election Atmosphere
In Surat, amidst the excitement of municipal elections, the first trial run of a double-decker AC electric bus was observed on the streets. The trial, conducted from the station to Kamrej, attracted the attention of city residents, with many stopping to see the bus.
As per report, the trial was conducted by the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC). The bus was operated on the route from the station through Kosad to Kamrej, where a team of engineers closely inspected the height of bridges, traffic, and road turns. Based on this report, the final route will be determined in the future.
Under the municipal corporation's plan, Surat is expected to receive two permanent double-decker AC electric buses in the coming months. These buses will be specifically used on major city routes and tourist spots, such as Dumas Beach, allowing passengers to enjoy views of the city from the upper deck. It is reported that the procurement process for these buses is in the final stages, and they will be purchased from Switch Mobility at the same rate at which GSRTC placed the order.
This deal will also include 10 years of maintenance and charging infrastructure. During the trial, crowds gathered on the streets to see the bus, with many taking selfies and sharing videos on social media. There was notable enthusiasm for this new mode of transport, especially among youth and children.
It is noteworthy that around 450 electric buses are already operating in Surat, and preparations are underway to add 600 more buses under the central government's e-drive scheme. The inclusion of double-decker buses could provide a new identity to the city's public transport system.
