Surat: Important Meeting Between FOSTA and Torrent Power to Prevent Fires in the Textile Market, Strategy Developed on Safety Measures
A significant meeting was held between FOSTA and Torrent Power to address the increasing incidents of fire in the textile market. The main objective of the meeting was to discuss the causes of fire incidents and develop concrete and effective solutions.
Dinesh Kataria, the General Secretary of FOSTA, mentioned that according to information received from Torrent Power, many shops are using electricity loads exceeding the prescribed capacity. He appealed to traders to provide accurate load details of their establishments to facilitate timely improvements and prevent accidents. He also suggested using connectors or terminals instead of traditional black tape for wire joints to reduce issues like loose connections, sparking, and short circuits, thereby making wiring safer.
Officials from Torrent Power clarified that the process of increasing the load up to 10 kilowatts is simple and does not require complex paperwork. The meeting identified excessive use of temporary wiring, lack of regular servicing of air conditioners, and unsafe use of electrical equipment as major causes of fire incidents. Torrent Power reported that self-declaration forms have been distributed in the markets, and notices have been issued in several locations.
Additionally, a report is being prepared by a licensed electrical contractor to inspect the wiring after the meter, load, switches, connections, and earthing conditions. Several important proposals were also presented during the meeting, including holding joint meetings with all stakeholders, re-filling self-declaration forms, analyzing shop loads, and implementing immediate technical improvements as needed.
It was ultimately agreed that better coordination, awareness, and regular inspections among traders, FOSTA, and Torrent Power are essential to prevent fire incidents. Officials from Torrent Power, including Bhavik Desai, Deepen Patel, Karthik Chawla, and Chetanbhai, were also present at the meeting.
