Surat: Inauguration of Fire Service Week in Kavas, Tribute to Martyr Firefighters

Fire Service Week was officially inaugurated on April 14, 2026, at the NTPC campus in Kavas, Surat. During the ceremony, the chief guest, General Manager and Project Head (Kavas) Shrikant Kerhakar, along with senior officials from NTPC/KGPP, paid tribute to the martyr firefighters.

The Deputy Commandant of the CISF unit, K.P.S. Saini, Assistant Commandant (Fire) Prabhu Prasad, and other personnel also honored the martyrs. All dignitaries and attendees observed two minutes of silence in memory of the brave firefighters.

During this time, the chief guest also released a fire safety booklet aimed at increasing public awareness about fire safety. Fire Service Week will be celebrated from April 14 to April 20, 2026. This year's theme is 'Safe Schools, Safe Hospitals, and an Aware Society for Fire Safety – Together for Fire Prevention.' Throughout the week, various awareness programs will inform citizens about fire prevention and safety measures.

It is noteworthy that Fire Service Day is observed every year on April 14, in memory of the devastating fire at Victoria Dock in Mumbai on April 14, 1944, during which 66 firefighters of the Mumbai Fire Service sacrificed their lives while extinguishing a fire on a ship loaded with explosive materials. This day is solemnly observed across the country to honor their indomitable courage and sacrifice.
