Surat: Water Hyacinth Problem in Tapi River Increases Again, Threat to Water Quality Looms
As summer begins in Surat, the issue of water hyacinth in the Tapi River is becoming serious once again. This river is a major source of drinking water for the city, and the increasing amount of water hyacinth and silt could affect water quality.
The municipal corporation has installed divider machines in the weir area to remove the water hyacinth, but there are questions about their effectiveness at the local level. Large clusters of water hyacinth have accumulated in several places, affecting the flow of water in the reservoir. Experts indicate that the excess of water hyacinth has previously impacted the municipal corporation's water works.
Despite this, the current cleaning efforts do not appear satisfactory. Complaints have also emerged about dirty water and waste entering the river from some locations, exacerbating the problem. Last monsoon, the issue had temporarily decreased due to the overflow of the causeway, but now water hyacinth is spreading rapidly again.
Local residents allege that despite repeated complaints, the municipal administration has not taken concrete steps. If cleaning is not done in a timely manner, there could be a decline in water quality and an impact on the supply system in the coming days. City residents have demanded that the administration conduct an effective cleaning campaign as soon as possible and keep the Tapi River free from pollution.
