Trump Wants a Third Presidential Term, But It’s Constitutionally Impossible, Says US House Speaker Mike Johnson
Washington, October 29: US House Speaker Mike Johnson has stated that former President Donald Trump harbors a desire to serve a third term as president, but such a possibility does not exist under the US Constitution.
As per agency report, Johnson, a prominent Republican leader and known ally of Trump, revealed that he and Trump have discussed the matter, but clarified that a third presidential term would be unconstitutional. Addressing reporters at his daily press briefing in the Capitol on Tuesday, marking the 28th day of the partial government shutdown, Johnson said he sees “no path forward” for Trump to pursue a third term.
He further explained that the 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution explicitly bars any individual from serving more than two terms as president. Amending this provision would be a lengthy and complex process, requiring approval from both Congress and state legislatures, which could take years to accomplish.
Johnson added that while the idea may appeal to some of Trump’s supporters, the focus should remain on working for the American people during the current term.
His remarks come amid growing discussions around Trump’s ongoing influence in US politics. During his second term, Trump has reportedly exercised presidential powers in new and controversial ways, and has repeatedly expressed his wish to run for a third term.
While speaking to journalists aboard Air Force One on Monday during his trip to Japan, Trump reiterated that he “would love to run again,” though he acknowledged that the Republican Party already has strong contenders for the next presidential race, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance.
