Surat’s Donate Life Facilitates Another Successful Organ Donation, Giving New Life to a Patient
Surat: The city’s renowned organization Donate Life has once again set an inspiring example of humanity through a successful organ donation. The family of 66-year-old Ramgopal Totaram Bhardwaj, who was declared brain dead at Nirmal Hospital in Surat, donated his kidney, giving a new lease of life to a patient in need.
As per report, Donate Life has so far helped more than 1,240 people across India and abroad through successful organ transplants. Known as the Textile and Diamond City, Surat is increasingly being recognized as one of the leading cities promoting organ donation in the country.
A resident of Bhestan, late Ramgopal Bhardwaj was admitted to Nirmal Multispeciality Hospital at Majuragate on October 11 after suffering a stroke. He was treated under the supervision of specialist doctors Dr. Madhavi Gowda, Dr. Siddhesh Rajadhyaksha, Dr. Paresh Patel, and Dr. Nisarg Parmar. However, due to severe brain hemorrhage, he was declared brain dead on October 13.
Social worker Gopal Goswami informed Donate Life founder Nilesh Mandalevala about the case, after which the organization’s team reached the hospital and explained the process of organ donation to the family. Remembering their father’s generous nature, Ramgopal’s sons Nitesh, Vikesh, and Jitesh consented to donate his kidneys and liver. Medical evaluation found one kidney suitable for transplantation, while the liver could not be used due to fatty degeneration. The donated kidney was later transplanted to a patient at IKDRC, Ahmedabad.
Under the guidance of Donate Life, the entire donation process was carried out smoothly with active coordination between hospital authorities and the organization’s team members — Subhash Jodhani, Nihir Prajapati, Vishal Chauhan, and Bharat Trivedi.
To date, a total of 1,347 organs and tissues have been donated through Donate Life, including 547 kidneys, 237 livers, 57 hearts, 52 lungs, 9 pancreases, 8 hands, 1 small intestine, and 436 pairs of eyes. These donations have helped 1,242 patients regain life and vision across India and abroad.
Donate Life expressed deep gratitude to the late Ramgopal Bhardwaj and his family, stating that their noble decision adds another inspiring chapter to Surat’s growing reputation as the “Organ Donation Capital” of India.
