From Colours to Cinema: The Inspiring Journey of Ramlakhan D. Sahani

Surat – A journey that began with colours, moved through the path of journalism, and has now reached the world of cinema—this story of Ramlakhan D. Sahani is no less than a film script. Born in Renukoot, Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh, Ramlakhan has been living in Surat for nearly three decades.

His childhood was spent in the riverside forests of Renukoot. His father, Dhanraj Nishad, was the chief senior pump operator at Birla’s Hindustan Aluminium Corporation (HINDAL) and was highly respected for his swimming skills and fearless nature. This environment instilled courage and resilience in young Ramlakhan.

After completing his primary education in Renukoot, circumstances forced him to move to his ancestral village, Barhaj in Deoria. The lack of a learning environment there caused him to falter, and he was unable to complete his 10th standard—a major setback in his early life.

In the midst of despair, he decided to move to Surat with his uncle’s children. Living in a small rented room, he began working in furniture and painting. With sheer hard work, he mastered colouring and interior decoration, not only advancing his own career but also creating jobs for dozens of youths, many of whom went on to become contractors. This was the phase when the seed of social responsibility sprouted within him.

Witnessing social inequalities and exploitation, he stepped into journalism. As a reporter, he raised his voice on many issues and gave a platform to the people. Alongside journalism, he resumed his education and in 2016, he earned his bachelor’s degree from Deendayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur University.

From journalism, his passion gradually shifted towards cinema. His love for stories and dialogues turned him into a scriptwriter. Alongside acting in Gujarati, Hindi, and Bhojpuri films, he is now moving into writing and direction.

Today, under the banner of Dhanraj Motion Pictures, he is producing films aimed not only at entertainment but also at social change. His works focus on bringing forth untold stories of Indian history and addressing social evils such as casteism and untouchability. Having played small roles in Gujarati and Hindi films, he is now working on his upcoming creation, “Videshi Mehmaan,” which is set to release soon on the big screen.

Ramlakhan’s life is proof that failure is never the end. With determination and passion, every struggle can open the doors to success. From paints and brushes to the voice of society, and now to cinematic storytelling, his journey continues to inspire.
