Surat sets another milestone in organ donation as family of migrant worker donates organs

Surat – The city of Surat has set another inspiring example in the field of organ donation. The family of 30-year-old Dharmendra Kumar Nishad, a migrant worker from Chhattisgarh who was declared brain dead, chose to donate his organs, giving a new lease of life to three patients in need. This marked the 25th successful organ donation facilitated by the Jivandeep Organ Donation Foundation.

Nishad suffered a severe head injury on September 3, 2025, after falling from the stairs of his home. He was admitted to Diamond Hospital on Varachha Road, where doctors declared him brain dead on September 8 during the course of treatment. In this tragic moment, Dr. Haresh Pagda of Diamond Hospital reached out to the Jivandeep Organ Donation Foundation, which counseled the grieving family about the importance of organ donation. Despite their sorrow, his wife, children, and parents displayed remarkable courage and agreed to the donation, sending a powerful message to society.

Following the family’s consent, the foundation coordinated with Gujarat’s State Organ and Tissue Organization (SOTO) and the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) to complete the procedure. Nishad’s liver and both kidneys were allocated to IKDRC Hospital in Ahmedabad.

To ensure timely transplantation, Surat and Gujarat Police created a green corridor from Diamond Hospital to IKDRC. Traffic was cleared along the route, enabling the ambulance to reach the hospital without delay. As per agency report, the act not only saved three lives but also highlighted Surat’s growing role as a leader in organ donation awareness and execution.
