Women of Vadodara’s Tarasali Sharad Nagar Sakhi Mandal create eco-friendly Ganesh idols
Vadodara, August – In a unique blend of livelihood and environmental awareness, the women of Parishram Sakhi Mandal in Tarasali Sharad Nagar, Vadodara, have been crafting eco-friendly Ganesh idols using natural materials. These idols, made from cow dung, garden and vegetable waste, leaves, and home-prepared organic manure, range between six and twelve inches in size. Their special feature lies in the fact that once immersed in water, the seed placed in the idol’s hand germinates into a plant.
According to Sakhi Mandal president Kanuben, the initiative was made possible through the central government’s National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM). Under the scheme, a group of 10 women was formed and provided with a revolving fund of Rs. 10,000, which enabled them to start this livelihood activity.
Beginning in 2022 with just 30 idols, the women expanded their efforts in subsequent years. They produced 65 idols in 2023, 100 in 2024, and around 250 idols in the current year, 2025, which were sold not only in Vadodara but also in other states. So far, over 450 idols have been sold, generating an income of nearly Rs. 40,000. Depending on the size, the idols are priced between Rs. 600 and Rs. 1,200.
As per agency report, the women, empowered by the NULM scheme, have demonstrated that with the proper use of government initiatives, it is possible to achieve self-reliance while also sending out a powerful message of environmental conservation. Their efforts stand as an inspiring example of how traditional festivities can be celebrated in a sustainable and meaningful way.
