In Surat, Family of 97-Year-Old Woman Sets Example with Eye, Body, and Blood Donation
Surat, July 22 – In a remarkable gesture of humanity and social service, the family of the late Jamanaben Kachhadia (age 97) from Surat donated her eyes and body after her demise, turning her final rites into an inspiring act of compassion. Her son, Maganbhai Ranabhai Kachhadia, took the initiative to donate her body to Kiran Medical College for academic purposes and also arranged for her eyes to be donated, restoring sight to two visually impaired individuals.
This noble act was carried out with the support of several organizations including Lokdrishti Eye Bank, Indian Red Cross Society (Choryasi Branch), Saksham Surat Mahanagar, Lions Club of Surat East, Rotary Club of Surat East, and Ugam Fauj.
The donation was made in the presence of family members including sons Rameshbhai, grandsons Pareshbhai and Manojbhai, daughters-in-law Manjuben Maganbhai, daughter Kanchanben, and granddaughters Manisha, Asmita, Tripti, and Sarika—all of whom took part in the inspiring farewell. Jamanaben originally hailed from Asodar village in Amreli district and resided in the Sarathana area of Surat.
As a tribute, the family also organized a blood donation camp during the ‘uthna’ (post-cremation prayer meeting), where several youth paid homage to their grandmother by donating blood. Dr. Praful Shiroya from Lokdrishti Eye Bank pointed out that many women could not donate blood due to low hemoglobin levels, emphasizing the need for women to adopt iron-rich diets.
Social workers and community leaders including Dr. Shiroya, Rajkishore Behera, Dr. Bhavesh Shingala, Vikram Damani, and Shailesh Beldiya prayed for peace for the departed soul and strength for the grieving family.
The farewell of Jamanaben Kachhadia became a shining example of selfless service, raising awareness about the importance of organ and blood donation in society.
