Eight Dead After Bridge Collapse in Vadodara Sends Vehicles Plunging into River
Vadodara, July 9 – In a tragic incident on Wednesday morning, a section of the 40-year-old Gambhira Bridge in Gujarat's Vadodara district collapsed, causing multiple vehicles to plunge into the Mahisagar River. According to police, eight people lost their lives in the incident, while five others were rescued and are currently receiving medical treatment.
Superintendent of Police (Vadodara Rural), Rohan Anand, informed that a slab of the Gambhira Bridge gave way, leading to the fall of at least five vehicles into the river. The bridge serves as a vital link between central Gujarat and the Saurashtra region.
Padra Police Inspector Vijay Charan confirmed that five individuals were successfully rescued from the river and are being treated for their injuries.
Gujarat Minister Rishikesh Patel stated that the bridge was constructed in 1985 and had undergone maintenance as required. He assured that a detailed investigation will be conducted to determine the exact cause of the collapse. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has instructed a team of technical experts to visit the site and assess the situation.
Visuals from the scene show a complete section of the bridge collapsing between two pillars, dragging vehicles down with it. The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 AM and involved two trucks, two vans, and other vehicles.
Emergency response teams, including the Vadodara fire department and local residents, launched immediate rescue operations. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) also reached the site with specialized rescue equipment to aid in the efforts.
The Gambhira Bridge, spanning about 900 meters with 23 supporting pillars, connects the districts of Vadodara and Anand. The bridge, inaugurated in 1985, is a crucial part of the regional transport network.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation as rescue and recovery operations remain underway.
