66th Successful Organ Donation at Surat’s New Civil Hospital Gives New Life to Three Patients
Surat – In a remarkable act of medical generosity and humanitarian spirit, Surat’s New Civil Hospital has completed its 66th successful organ donation. The organs of Dhankiben Rathod, a brain-dead woman from Moti Melan Faliya in Jalalpor, Navsari district, have given a new lease of life to three patients in need. Her liver and both kidneys were donated and have since been transported to Ahmedabad’s Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC).
According to available information, 45-year-old Dhankiben Chanabhai Rathod had sustained a serious head injury about a month ago after a fall while working in the fields. She was initially treated at Navsari Civil Hospital and discharged after showing signs of recovery. However, she began experiencing discomfort again due to the head injury and was readmitted for further treatment.
As her condition deteriorated, she was transferred on June 10 to the emergency ward at Surat’s New Civil Hospital via 108 ambulance. Despite intensive care efforts, her condition worsened, and after two days of critical monitoring, a team of doctors including RMO Dr. Ketan Nayak, Dr. Nilesh Kachhadia, neurosurgeon Dr. Keyur Prajapati, and neurologist Dr. Jay Patel declared her brain-dead late on the night of June 12.
The State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTO) team, led by Dr. Ketan Nayak and Dr. Nilesh Kachhadia, along with Gujarat Nursing Council Vice President Iqbal Kadivala and counselor Nirmala Kachhad, sensitively explained the importance of organ donation to the Rathod family. With the support of her daughters Jaguben, Sharadaben, Vanitaben, and son Bhulabhai, the family agreed to the noble act of organ donation.
In the early hours of the following day, Dhankiben’s liver and kidneys were transported to IKDRC in Ahmedabad, where they will offer a second chance at life to three patients awaiting transplants.
Under the guidance of Medical Superintendent Dr. Dharitri Parmar, the entire medical and nursing staff, along with security personnel, sanitation workers, and dedicated volunteers, worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the organ donation process. This latest effort marks the 66th organ donation completed at New Civil Hospital, reflecting the growing awareness and commitment to organ donation in the region.
