Career Workshop on Fashion Design and Garment Technology Organized by MANTRA in Surat
Surat: A career guidance workshop focused on fashion design and garment technology was organized on Sunday near the Millennium Textile Market, adjacent to the BSNL Exchange on Ring Road. The event was hosted by the Man-Made Textiles Research Association (MANTRA) and witnessed the participation of a large number of students and their parents.
The workshop commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Anup Rakhshit, Director of the institution. He shared insights about the founding of MANTRA, its achievements, and current initiatives. Established in 1977 by the late Arunbhai Jariwala, the organization has been actively involved in textile research and training. As per agency report, since September 2024, MANTRA has been running a dedicated Garment Centre offering a one-year course in Fashion Design and Garment Technology, recognized by Kaushalya – The Skill University, Ahmedabad. Additionally, various skill development trainings such as Sewing Machine Operation, Cutting, Stitching, and Production Supervision are also conducted at the center.
Chetan Bharucha, head of the Garment Centre, elaborated on several technical aspects related to fashion and garment design, including digital design, sketching, apparel CAD, cutting, stitching, and finishing. He emphasized that Surat's garment industry has a growing need for technically skilled professionals, a gap MANTRA aims to bridge through its specialized programs.
Bharucha also highlighted the availability of government scholarships for students from economically weaker sections. In a significant move, the institution has announced that stitching training will now be provided free of cost, enabling aspiring youth to gain practical skills without financial burden.
Participants of the workshop were also given a tour of the MANTRA Garment Centre, where they viewed an exhibition showcasing student designs and ongoing projects. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Deputy Director Dr. Hitesh Jariwala, marking the end of an informative and inspiring session for future fashion professionals.
